Thermoplastic polyurethane-based nanocomposites reinforced with carbon fillers

Please Cite as: CHEMIK 2016, 70, 11–12, 685–690 Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) behaves both as a crosslinking rubber and thermoplast at ambient temperature during use and at elevated processing temperature, respectively. In this paper, thermoplastic polyurethane reinforced with carbon nanofillers (e.g. carbon nanotubes, graphene and expanded graphite) was presented. Carbon nanofillers improve mechanical strength, thermal stability and are effective modifiers for manufacturing electrically conductive nanocomposites. Improved or new properties of TPU nanocomposites depend not only on the amount of filler and the method of its incorporation into the polymer matrix, but also on the occurrence of a specific interactions between the filler and rigid or soft TPU segments. Therefore the proper selection and modification of chemical structure of the polymer and filler are crucial for the successful manufacturing of new material with desired properties. Obtaining PVC/CNT nanocomposites with the use of dispersing agents Katarzyna SKÓRCZEWSKA, Danuta CHMIELEWSKA, Kazimierz PISZCZEK, Jolanta TOMASZEWSKA, Tomasz STERZYŃSKI - Faculty of Chemical Technology and Engineering, University of Technology and Life Sciences, Bydgoszcz Please cited as: CHEMIK 2011, 65, 4, 337-342 Method is presented for the preparation of nanocomposites of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), wherein the nanoparticles are dispersed in a solution of PVC in tetrahydrofuran (THF), with the addition of dispersing aids (MWCNT content in final nanocomposite 1% wt.). The dispersing aids used (known from the literature) were oleic acid (OA) and methyl oleate (MO). The effect of dispersants on the stability and quality of the carbon nanotubes dispersion in PVC solution was determined. The homogeneity of carbon nanotubes distribution in nanocomposite films was assessed using optical microscopy. Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany Abstract: In this study, the photoactuation of styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene (SIS) block copolymer containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is shown. In order to improve dispersion, the MWCNT were ovalently modified either by polystyrene chains or cholesteryl chloroformate. The composites were prepared by solution technique and in the form of prestretched stripes were tested by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) in iso-strain mode. The actuation stress produced in response to irradiation was monitored.
